Candle caring ritual
Share
Concrete is a living material. It holds warmth, shows its pores, and changes a little with time. A few simple habits keep both the candle and the vessel at their best.
Trim before every light
Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (5 mm) each time. A short wick gives a calm, steady flame and keeps soot off the rim.
Find a quiet spot
Burn your candle on a heat-safe surface, away from open windows, fans and vents. Drafts make the flame flicker and the wax melt unevenly. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it away from children, pets and anything that can catch fire.
Know when to stop
Stop burning when about 1/2 inch (1 cm) of wax remains at the bottom. This protects the vessel and the surface beneath it.
Caring for the vessel
Concrete is porous, so it can absorb oils and water. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth rather than washing it. If wax spills on the outside, let it harden, then lift it off gently.
A second life
When the candle is finished, place the vessel in the freezer for a few hours. The remaining wax will shrink and lift out easily. Clean the inside with warm, soapy water, let it dry fully, and use it for small plants, matches, brushes or keys.
